Pandemic Unemployment Assistance Program Update
Tuesday, April 7 2020 4:20 PM
In today’s daily update with the Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL), Secretary Delia Garcia and Unemployment Insurance Deputy Director Shawn Yancy, shared the following:
1. KDOL has received guidance from the United States Department of Labor regarding implementation of the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) program.
2. The PUA program is not yet operational at KDOL.
3. KDOL is advising the self-employed to file an unemployment claim to demonstrate ineligibility for traditional unemployment insurance (UI). When asked for employment information, put your information. You should receive a denial in the mail. Though perhaps counter-intuitive, in this case, receiving a denial is positive because in order to be eligible for the Federal PUA program, you must be ineligible for traditional UI.
4. Tomorrow, KDOL is hosting a Facebook live event at 3:00 p.m. CST to provide further details around their intended administration of the PUA program. All interested in PUA program benefits are encouraged to watch.
