As someone said, “the November 8th, 2016 United States Presidential election is shaping up as one for the record books. Voters will choose Hillary Clinton, the Democrat, or Donald Trump, the Republican. The election will also determine which party controls Congress. Voting should be at the top of the list of our responsibilities in a democratic society. It goes without saying that some of us will find all kinds of excuses as to why we will not vote in this election.” It’s easy to adopt an attitude of, “why bother?” or, “my vote is only a single vote cast among many.”
What is one vote??? Here are examples where one vote did make a difference! Thomas Jefferson was elected President by one vote in the Electoral College. So was John Quincy Adams. Rutherford B. Hayes was elected president by one vote. His election was contested, and referred to an electoral commission where the matter was again decided by one vote.
The man who cast the deciding vote for President Hayes was himself elected to Congress by a margin of one vote. In this issue you will see the biographies of 8 qualified RSCK member candidates that will be vying for YOUR vote, and are anxious, eager, and willing to put forth their time, energy, and experience to serve YOU as a Director on the Board of REALTORS® of South Central Kansas. They understand the dedication, devotion, and sacrifice away from their daily activities (and sometimes home and family) to commit the next three (3) years to serve their members. I encourage you to take time to read about them and honor them with your VOTE!!
You read, or at least hear the news every day that our very industry is under a constant barrage and attack by outside entities trying to dilute, or even eliminate the public’s perspective that there is even a need for REALTORS®. They want to take our jobs away from us.
This slate of candidates recognizes that the next few months and years bring significant challenges to our profession to maintain our value as an absolute part of any real estate transaction. As sales professionals, it is imperative that we be proactive and involved in preserving the integrity of this wonderful industry of real estate. Today we are the advocates and champions of real estate owners and buyers in this awesome nation of free enterprise. We must not quit, nor faint at the battles that face us in every level of government.
Voting for RSCK Director Elections opens August 19, 2019. Watch your email for details. Also, our local Primary Election opens August 6th, 2019. Last but not least, I say one more time……. VOTE!!!
Remember, “One transaction a career does not make.” We’re all in this together, hopefully for the long haul, so let’s network, make some friends, build relationships, and have some fun on the journey. It’s your career-OWN IT!! ‘til next time………
Cleve Smith, 2019 RSCK President
